8 Tips On How To Dress Classy & Elegant
If you are an aspiring elegant lady, you most likely are on the demure hunt for classy looks for women. But where do you even start?
Of course, you can follow your favourite influencers, or perhaps you have found other blogs and websites before this one that is recommending you to the highest designer items that are a bit out of budget for the time being.
And here is the truth, you can be a lady of class on any budget. But there will be a few style elements that you will want to watch out for If you are wanting to look like a true high-class woman!
WHAT IS CLASSY WOMAN STYLE?
I think it would be smart to first define what ‘classy’ is, so let’s take a look at what Oxford Languages has to say:
classy
/ˈklɑːsi/
adjectiveINFORMAL
stylish and sophisticated."the hotel is classy but relaxed"
My observations of classy clothes for women is that they will ultimately stand the test of time. Or one could say, ‘timeless’. To look like a woman with class, one will want to look sophisticated, and elegant and there are a few ways of achieving this.
1. ENSURE YOUR CLOTHING HAS THE RIGHT FIT
Dressing elegantly is actually quite easy. But first and foremost, one must understand their body type, and what type of clothing looks good on them. And this often happens by trial and error.
Getting clothes to fit you appropriately will be a task for anyone of any body type. This is not just a task for someone who is on the larger side, or just for someone who is on the smaller side.
Every single person will have items that suit their figure, and not suit their figure. And with that being said, one should really experiment with different items of clothing to assess what suits their figure or not.
If there are particular items that you may love, but it has a fit that is slightly off. You can take this item to a tailor and they will make sure that the item fits you like a glove.
You may be wondering, why does this matter so much when you are trying to figure out how to dress classy and elegant?
This is the first point that I want to discuss because it does not matter how expensive an item is. How new and well-made it may be. Or even many other content creators are recommending the item… If it it does not fit you well, you will look disheveled, unkempt, and not classy or elegant.
So do try to make sure your clothing is fitting you well.
2. ENSURE YOU ARE WEARING THE RIGHT COLOURS FOR YOUR SKIN TONE
Have you ever noticed that you naturally gravitate to certain colours? This is typical because the colours that ‘work’ for us, are typically the colours that most work with our skin tone.
We can all wear most colours, but finding the right tone will be imperative.
You can work with a fashion stylist and get your colours done. And this is truly the secret to looking good in everything that you wear. Colour analysis takes your natural colouring and equips you with the knowledge and confidence to look fabulous - effortlessly, every single day.
Once you have understood the colours that naturally harmonise with your unique skin tone and eye colour. You will be able to dress classy & elegant, always.
3. PURCHASE THE APPROPRIATE LINGERIE THAT WILL APPROPRIATELY SUPPORT YOUR FIGURE
Picture this, you have just put on the most elegant navy midi dress, it fits you like a glove. And you look absolutely radiant. But then you have a bulge popping out above your bra line, and you are spilling our of your bra.
I say this with the utmost love, respect, and care… As I am a well-endowed woman myself, this is a constant struggle. But for those of us who have these challenges, it is something that we will often need to be on the lookout for.
If possible, try to get the matching sets. .And don’t forget to get rid of items that are past their prime.
If you do not feel classy, chic, or elegant underneath your clothing, you will not feel any of that above your clothing.
Also, while we are on this topic, we should definitely talk about VPL ( aka visible panty line ). There are so many options on the market for panties that won’t show a visible line. Some women prefer to wear thongs to resolve this issue.
Personally, I love Fantasie Lingerie’s “Smoothease”. They are so incredibly comfortable and show zero lines.
4. AVOID FLASHING TOO MUCH SKIN
The easiest way to make an item, your outfit, and yourself look cheap is… to show too much skin. I think if you find yourself reading this website, you will be in agreeance with me on this topic. And I totally hear you out, this can seem a bit dated.
I recently created a TikTok on this topic and many people were in disagreement with me. But the fact is, if you show too much skin, you will look cheap, and people will further judge you on this. I do not make the rules, nor do I even necessarily think that they are fair. However, they just are.
If you are going to wear a skirt or a dress, ensure that this is of an appropriate length and not too short.
If you are going to wear a shirt that has a V-Neck or a Cowl neck, ensure that this is not too low.
If you are not wanting to dress classy or elegant, this will not apply to you.
5. MAKE SURE YOUR CLOTHING IS STEAMED OR IRONED
So, you have found the right outfit, that is of an appropriate length, that is the perfect color for you, & is very well made. You have even gone the extra mile to get it tailored so it looks like it is custom-made for you.
You can throw all of that elegance, class, and sophistication out the window, if you do not do your due diligence and ensure that your classy & elegant clothing is ironed, and or steamed.
If we are being honest, sometimes this doesn’t get done due to lack of organisation & we do not have the appropriate tools, sometimes this doesn’t get done due to us not allocating enough time in our day to get this done.
One of the ways that I have personally tried to circumvent this is, by ensuring I have a steamer on hand. One that is portable, and one that puts off an efficient stream of steam. Our previous steamer used to just gently stream out, and it took forever to steam anything. And therefore, we rarely steamed our items!
6. ACCESSORISE IN A MINIMAL AND SOPHISTICATED WAY
We are talking about dressing here, so I do not want to focus too much on personal grooming and or beauty. However, with that being said, your entire ensemble will include the accessories that you choose to adorn yourself with.
I personally try to follow the wise words of Coco Chanel on this topic….
One of the most unfortunate & common things I witness is when gorgeous, feminine women, do not appropriately understand how to accessorize.
One should really try to only wear one statement item at a time. Otherwise, the rest of the items will just compete with one another. Wearing more than one statement item at a time will result in a look that looks cluttered, tacky, and cheap. Completely opposite of the elegance that we are trying to achieve here.
7. A CLASSY WOMAN CHOOSES QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
Understandably, we are all dealing with different budgets. This is why I did not want to make this a guide of exact stores, brands, or logos to shop with. Because in order to dress classy & elegantly, one must also choose quality over quantity.
However, that quality will be dictated by your own personal budget.
Regardless of what your particular budget is, if possible if you can try to pick up items that are in natural fabrics. Some of the reasons that fast fashion does not give an elegant or classy look is its mass production!
Items that have loose threads, misaligned stitching, & are see-through because the fabric is so thin and cheap… These items will never give you a classy or elegant look.
It is much better to pick up items and create a capsule wardrobe with these high-quality garments. And then you can implement a 10-item wardrobe, and add in any new seasonal pieces.
This is a practical way of leveling up your wardrobe to be as high quality as you can.
8. A WOMAN WITH CLASS IS CONFIDENT
Last but certainly not least, if you are looking to dress classy & elegantly, you will need to have a level of confidence to match the stunning, classy & elegant items that you are wearing.
If your confidence is lacking, you will find that you won’t be wearing your elegant & classy clothes, your elegant & classy clothes will be wearing you.
I hope this helps you on your level-up journey. Let me know your favourite tips for dressing classy & elegant in the comments.
